Jan Slimacek studied flute and organ at the Secondary Music School in Kromeriz between 1954-59. He got acquainted with modern compositional methods at the Prague Conservatory under Miloslav Kabelac (1959-62). After graduating Jan Slimacek settled in Plzen where he has been working since 1967 as a music producer and editor with Czechoslovak Radio, later he has also devoted himself to teaching.
The music of Slimacek is imposing for its structural purity and integrity of musical expression. His exploitation of musical material is economical, creative and with the sense for colour of sound.
The orchestral works, which met with an extraordinary reception, are Three Miniatures for chamber orchestra, symphonic picture Overture of Victory, Quattro intermezzi, The Dramatic Picture. His Concertino for accordion, elektravox and orchestra was the first composition of its kind in the world music. The vocal compositions of Jan Slimacek are represented by cantatas Musica e canto for reciter, choir and orchestra (on biblical text), and De amicitia for solo, choir and orchestra (on Latin text by A. Spelda).
Jan Slimacek´s works were awarded at some prestigious competitions and festivals, and have been performed in many countries (Canada, Germany, USSR, Austria, Finland, England and others).
