He studied composition at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague with Vaclav Dobias (1963-1968). After finishing his studies, he taught for some time the theory of music at the secondary music school. Since 1977 he's been a producer at Supraphon where he has made many recordings with outstanding Czech and foreign artists. Besides, he works as a lecturer on musical production at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague. In 1996 he was the recipient of the Music Critic's Award for the composition "Dreams and Landscapes" and of the Classic 96 Awards in the category of composition for his "Eight Songs on Poems by Ivan Wernisch". Jaroslav Rybar is a member of the composer's society Atelier '90, and his new compositions are premiered regularly at the annual festival of the society (Three Days' Festival).
