Vladimír Tichý studied at technical college and then started to work as a designer. Alongside his technical studies he also started to cornpose, and entered composition classes at the People's Conservatory in Prague (1964 - 1970). While still having been employed, he studied at the Academy of Arts and Music in J. Pauer\'s composition class (1970-1975). He graduated with First Symphony for large orchestra. He completed his academic studies with composition course given by Franco Donatoni at Italian Siena (1973), and a two-year postgraduate course of musical theory under Karel Risinger (Prague Academy of Performing Arts and Music, 1977 - 1979). ln the years 1975 - 1977 he was manager of sound archives at the Academy of Performing Arts and Music and after that he started with pedagogical activity: since 1977 he has been teaching theoretical subjects at the Jan Deyl Conservatory and Secondary school for Visually Impaired, since 1978 he has been lecturer of composition analysis at the Academy of Performing Arts and Music (as a member of the Department of Music Theory and History, since 1996 he has been acting as profesor of music theory, and at present also the Vice dean at the same faculty).
Vladimír Tichý has concentrated his attention mostly on instrumental music. A number of his works has been performed at music festival in the former Czechoslovakia. His Concerto for Violoncello and Orchestra was awarded third prize in the Competition of young composers of the Czech Socialist Republic in 1978 (launched by the Czech Ministry of Culture). Later on, his Second Symphony received the first prize in the same competition (in 1980).
